The only available historical dictionary devoted exclusively to the
1940s, this book offers readers a ready-reference portrait of one
of the twentieth century's most tumultuous decades. In nearly 600
concise entries, the volume quickly defines a historical figure,
institution, or event, and then points readers to three sources
that treat the subject in depth. In selecting topics for inclusion,
the editors and authors offer a representative slice of life as
contemporaneous Americans saw it - with coverage of people;
movements; court cases; and economic, social, cultural, political,
military, and technological changes. The book focuses chiefly on
the United States, but places American lives and events firmly
within a global context.
In this elegant and sensitive look at the milieu of the World's
Columbian Exposition of 1893, James Gilbert examines the three
utopias that were designed to bring order to the chaos of urban
life: The World's Fair itself, George Pullman's community for his
workers, and Dwight Moody's evangelical crusade. Gilbert draws upon
a rich selection of fiction, collective biography, architecture,
photographs, and souvenir books to show how these experiments each
acted as a middle-class prescription for coming to terms with the
new cultural diversity and competition resulting from the
disruptive forces of technological change, commercial enterprise,
and pluralism.
Mr. Gilbert's splendid book opens the door on a conflicted past,
and provides an indispensable perspective on the troubled and
troubling struggle we face today between old and new, unity and
diversity.--Alan Trachtenberg, New York Times
Perfect Cities is a remarkable account of a struggle for cultural
definition. Chronicling the byplay between cultural homogeneity and
heterogeneity, unity and diversity, James Gilbert not only throws
light on Chicago's past but also provides insight that can be
applied to the cultural debates of our own time.--Adria Bernardi,
Chicago Tribune
What Gilbert has done is to enable the reader to experience the
grand utopian visions of the times, yet at the same time see the
cantankerous reality that made the visions impossible.--Henry
Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times
The great M. R. James is the undisputed master of the ghost story.
So what happened when he set his sights on writing a fairy tale?
Nothing less than eerily bewitching magic... In this brilliant tale
which takes the form of a letter to a girl called Jane, the unnamed
main character, a man much like James himself, a studious and quiet
gentleman, tells of his strange experiences recently. His five
senses have been behaving oddly lately - he begins to hear
whispering words in the rush of a stream; stopping for a rest, he
dreams of a strange plant growing between tree-roots in a wood
through which the stream runs. On waking, and led along by the
stream's whispering, he finds that the place and the plant are
indeed real. He eats part of it, and a very peculiar thing happens
- suddenly he can see under the ground Astonished and fascinated,
he walks on. To his amazement, his new deeper vision enables him to
spy, buried a few inches beneath the surface, a mysterious metallic
box. Intrigued, he digs it up, but it seems completely sealed. Late
that night, back in his room, just when the moon shines directly
onto the box, cracks appear Inside are five jars, with odd ancient
writing on them giving tantalizing hints of what their contents
might be able to do... Now begins a fascinating journey into a
world none of us mere mortals can usually see: a world of weird
enchantment, where all is not as it seems, where fantastic beauty
is commonplace, where strange beings are hidden just out of sight
everywhere, and yet disturbing danger lurks around every corner...
Told in James' matter-of-fact prose, this journey into the unknown
stirs rich colours into a cloud of imaginative fancy, stunningly
creating an alternative world, just next to ours, which is both
captivating and eerie. This edition contains 7 evocative
illustrations by Gilbert James, which are precursors, in their
combination of fine line-work and otherworldly atmosphere, to the
work of Edward Gorey. Montague Rhodes James was born in 1862 at
Goodnestone in Kent. He attended King's College, Cambridge, and
later became its provost, leaving to take up the provost's position
at Eton College. He published many scholarly antiquarian works, but
quickly became known for his ghost stories, which are now
recognized as the finest in the genre; of these, four collections
were published. He died at Eton in 1936.

'Analysis of Food Contaminants' was published in 1984 by Elsevier
Applied Science Publishers and 10 years later I was asked to
consider producing an updated second edition. Surprisingly little
has really changed in a decade in terms of the public interest in
food safety and the continued vigilance of Government in monitoring
the food supply for contaminants. This means that food
contamination in itself is still a very relevant topic. However,
much has changed in terms of the techniques now employed in trace
analysis. The 1984 book used a combination of an analytical
technique and a specific food contaminant problem area per chapter
(each written by a specialist) which resulted in a multi-authored
text which was mostly application based but provided a good
introduction to the 'how' in terms of applying techniques to real
problems. Rather than producing a second edition of this text, it
seemed on reflection more sensible to produce a new and
complementary book, using the same formula as before of application
plus technique, but to concentrate on contaminant areas of current
interest and to highlight recent advances in techniques. Thus, the
present book 'Progress in Food Contaminant Analysis' has originated
as a follow-up to 'Analysis of Food Contaminants'.
To many, asset protection seems like an ultra-luxury. The aim of
this book is to let people know who can provide competent asset
protection planning, what asset protection is, where asset
protection can be done, when asset protection should be done, why
it is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, and how asset protection
can be achieved. To this end, it is written in a (hopefully)
approachable format for both the interested public and financial
professionals, and should cover the broad strokes of asset
protection planning in one sitting. If you believe that you don't
own enough to protect, ask yourself: How long did it take for me to
pay for and earn all of these assets? How would I feel if a
creditor took them, and my only alternative to save it is to
declare bankruptcy and ruin my credit?
